I know Les, he is the head of department at Kingston University where I am a visiting professor.
Les's work showed that the some of the constructs that are recommended against by the MISRA guidelines (his work predated the MISRA and so does not address them directly) occur in in real code and are a source of faults. So there is a benefit to avoiding them.
What Les did not do is provide a cost/benefit analysis of the guidelines.
